PROVENANCE:~  purchased in Hobart from the son in law of  Flight Officer Stanley Frank Allabarton’  ~  Read for further details regarding the provenance of this superb Rolex Oyster Ultra Prima 9ct Hexagonal Elinvar Hairspring AMAZING P.O.W. Provenance watch ~

Fascinated by the what Mr.Cartwright had told me about his deceased Father in law , S.F. Allabarton ,  I have since spent many many hours , emails , phone calls etc  ~  to arrive at the history behind the AMAZING Rolex Oyster Ultra Prima 18ct Hexagonal Elinvar Hairspring AMAZING Provenance !

This Rolex Oyster Ultra Prima 9ct Hexagonal Elinvar Hairspring AMAZING P.O.W. Provenance  watch has the evry best chronometer graded movement that Rolex sold at this point it time!
None were better.

The only way this “first Rolex Oyster”  could have cost anymore when new ,  was if it has been in a 18ct case.
As for the actual watch ,  it was the very best that Rolex manufactured ,  when it was made!
Ultra Prima chronometer with Elinvar hairspring.

I will start with the fact that this 1926/7 Rolex is the 321st Rolex Oyster ever made {later import date , naturally!   Very very early indeed ,  when you consider the millions & millions of Rolex Oysters made since  ……..  &  that this is the 321st made …… not an irrelevant point by any means.

Starting in 1914 ,  some dozen years before the watch was made.    A brash , tough &  ‘eager for action’ {like so many of his comrades of the time}  a young man called Stanley Frank Allabarton hears of Germany starting what later became known as WW1  {after the assassination of Franz ferdinand}  ~  He didn’t like the idea of saluting to  ”any man’s flag except the Union Jack” ,  so on the 15th August 1914 he enlisted in the English armed forces.

Entering the theater of war on the 14th of November 1914   >>>>>>  Just 2 months after “handing his life over” to the English hierarchy ,  he is fighting for his life in what most would consider ,  circumstances that one could never call being  “well trained & war  ready”.

                        ***********  IMAGES ATTACHED  ************
1}The same model plane But Not Allabarton’s plane ,  a little less safe they today’s.  This plane is his commanders plane ,  photo taken same day he was shot down. * see photo of commander seated with his captors

2}One of Stanley Frank Allabarton’s Colleagues reminding us of the rudimentary form of  “bombing the enemy”  ,   just a little but different to today’s fighters.

3}An Amazing photo & a very deceptive photo showing Allabarton , his commander & his cohorts ,  rehearsing for a POW play , some impeccably presented under the circumstances ,  whist the entire theatrical performance was a ruse ,  it was a cover for a genuine escape attempt!

4} Allabarton’s superior officer , seated front left {no flying boots} with this photo taken on the same day he was shot down ,  with the German officer who shot him down earlier that day , standing 3rd from left behind him .

5} Photo 2 of the actual plane that Stanley Frank Allabarton was piloting when shot down in enemy territory. One show half prop shot off ,  another images shows side view {damage visible} ** WITH Irrefutable evidence that this plane was indeed Allabarton’s ,  as the serial # of the plane is visible , image added shortly.

{I Would ask the reader to consider just how Incredibly Rare this ‘package is’!
To have images of the ww1 plane ,  taken just after it was ‘shot down & crash landed’ with English pilot taken P.O.W. , {WITH ONE IMAGE BEING T.H.E. ACTUAL PHOTO THAT THE GERMAN SOLDIER TOOK {not a copy} , approx; 104 YEARS AGO ,  sourced in Germany is!

>>>>  WITH further , Amazingly Rare Images , with one being an  “OFF THE RICHTER SCALE” OF RARITIES  …..  A PHOTO OF A  P.O.W. WHIST IMPRISONED ,  REHEARSING A PLAY ……. WITH THE PLAY  ‘COVERING THEIR ESCAPE PLOT’ !

THIS WATCH & THE COMPLETE GROUP OFFERING IS NOT ONLY INCREDIBLY  INTERESTING  &  IMPORTANT ,   IT IS ALSO EXCEPTIONALLY RARE & I BELIEVE ,  GENUINELY  UNDER PRICED at  au$8,775 {NOW $6,875}

 *****  I HAVE EXTENSIVE INFORMATION ON HIS SERVICE Etc ,  I ALSO ,  REMARKABLY & INCREDIBLY ,   HAVE OBTAINED THE  ORIGINAL PHOTO JUST AFTER ALLABARTON WAS CAPTURED  {AS MENTIONED}  &  WITH THE PHOTO TAKEN BY A GERMAN SOLDIER   &  SURVIVED ALL OF THESE YEARS ,  THEN I FIND IT FOR SALE IN GERMANY >>>>>  100 YEARS LATER !!!!!    BEING RECENTLY SOURCED FROM A GERMAN DEALER OF WW1 MEMORABILIA    ~~    UNFORTUNATELY I JUST MISSED ANOTHER ORIGINAL PHOTO OF THE SAME PLANE [though a copy of is attached & available to buyer}  ,  TAKEN FROM A DIFFERENT ANGLE ……

*** STANLEY IS IN THE “PLAY REHEARSAL” PHOTO ,  3rd FROM LEFT AS YOU VIEW THE PHOTO !!

SHOWING THE PLANES & THEREFORE {definitely on this occasion at least} THE PILOTS IDENTIFICATIONS WELL ………. CROSS REFERENCED WITH AIR CORPS RECORDS , AS SHOWN ,  PROVE BEYOND ANY SHADOW OF A DOUBT THAT BOTH PHOTOS WERE TAKEN JUST AFTER   STANLEY FRANK ALLABARTON WAS CAPTURED.         {more photo’s / info mentioned below}

WHAT AN EXCEPTIONAL PROVENANCE , PACKAGE  &  WATCH  ~  OUTSTANDING  &  I DARE SAY …… NEVER TO BE REPEATED !!

After various battles & proving himself to even the most hardest of men to impress …… his superiors decided to offer Allabarton the honour  of a ‘English commissioned officers’ rank   ~   and  on the 4th of August 1916 he was discharged  “on appointment of a commision”.

On the following day ,  he was  appointed 2nd Lieutenant Royal Flying Corp on the 5/9/16 ……. a major achievement in it’s own right!

Having never been in an airplane before  ~  let alone flown one ……….. Stanley Frank Allabarton was then Appointed Flying Officer on the  20/3/17 ,  some 6 & a half months of joining the Royal Air Corps ,  as the RAF was then called.

Remember that this was a little different to modern aeronautical warfare!    The planes flew so close to the ground and of course the enemy ,  making it a real possibility of  being shot down by a great shot  or a lucky shot from a one shot rifle!
{as has relatively recently been discovered had happened to the infamous Ace German pilot  ~ the Red Baron !}

Showing just how easy & often “grief came to pilots of WW1”  Unfortunately for Stanley Frank Allarbarton  ,  just a few weeks after “getting his wings”  he was shot down & declared missing in action on  19/5/17.

He was shortly to become a  P.O.W  in Karlsruhe, Germany.
Where , according to family records from Stanley himself ,  Officers were treated ‘like guests’  ~  drinking gin & tonic & playing cards ,  as mentioned & as one image suggests.

*** AMAZINGLY  I have been able to ,  as mentioned , source an original image of what various military sources state is a photo taken by German soldiers just after the forced emergency landing in enemy territory ,  of the plane being flown by Flight Officer Stanley Frank Allabarton at the time of his capture.
NOTE:~  the propeller ,   a little bit difficult to fly a single prop plane ,  with half a propellor.   {The photo was sourced fairly recently from a current German national who deals in WW1 memorabilia.  There were further images with one/some showing the plane’s I.D. #  which allowed the certain attribution to being the plane flown by flying officer  S.F.Allabarton ,  Royal Air Corps 1916.

He was transferred to Royal Air Force as Flight Lieutenant   on the 1/4/18  ~  obviously’ free’ at this stage.

On the 21st of January 1918 he handed in his commission ,  resigning from the now what had become & to this day remains   ~   the British Royal Air Force.

He was awarded the Service medals: 1914 Star for serving in Flanders.  The British War Medal   ~   and the Victory Medal.

He went on ,  some 20 years later & like so many of his comrades before him & after him ,  he preferred little company & eventually went on to life on & own an island in Canada {as you do}.    Starting & raising a family in idyllic conditions & surrounds ,  there is conjecture as to which island the family lived on / owned yet it was in the area of Boughton Island {if not Boughton Island!}

With family records stating that Stanley was also very well acquainted with Prime Minister Trudeau!     Naturally not the current Prime  Minister Trudeau ,  Prime Minister of Canada   ~   But his Father Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau .

Having kept his love of flying throughout his life ,  he was a trusted pilot of Pierre Trudeau’s & flew him around the many  islands that make up the country of Canada.

Wind the clock back ,  or more rightly ……….. wind the Rolex watch back to the late 1930’s / early 40’s period/s ,  with the fact that the watch has TWO initials & surname ,  changes the odd’s Dramatically  ~  to beyond any reasonable doubt that  this superb  Rolex Oyster Ultra Prima 9ct Hexagonal Elinvar Hairspring Amazing POW Provenance was indeed owned by Professor Henry Horace Williams   ~   Prior to being owned by  >>>>>>>>>>>>>

Retired Flight Officer British Air Corps Stanley Frank Allabarton   >>>>>>>  Prior to his amazing daughter becoming the third owner of this superb & Very early Rolex oyster 9ct gold Octagonal cased watch with Superb Original Enamel Dial ……… Discreetly  & Stylishly signed ,  in an arc ,   above the sub seconds dial  with the New term  “ROLEX OYSTER”   <<<<<<<<<<<<   THIS IS ONE TOP SHELF INVESTMENT NO BRAINER  &  WILL  N.E.V.E.R.   NOT BE WANTED !!!!

With Henry Horace Williams passing in 1940  ,   Allabarton remained in the islands for a further 7 or more years.   Finally moving back to the Ole Dart  &  settling in Brighton  ~  an old & still popular sea side tourist town of England.

Perhaps all the flying had affecting his thinking ,   though upon setting his family in comfortably in their new dig’s in sunny sea side Brighton ,  he became an antiques dealer!

Though at that point in time Americans were discovering both travel & antiques >>>>>>>  and many a sharp Englishman {& women} made good fortune from the “Americans enthusiasm”  &  inferior knowledge of antiques & decorative arts ,  at the time.

With the passing of a remarkable man ,  in Brighton 1966 ,  a very talented fashionista of the highest order would proudly take ownership of Flight Officer & ex-P.O.W. Stanley Frank Allabarton’s  9ct gold Rolex Oyster from her Father  &  therefore Elizabeth Anne Allabarton would continue the , what had now become th   “chain of over achievers” to have owned this
